About the Project
While working at Bitwise Industries, I led the design and UX/UI for STEM Taught’s web app, a platform designed to complement their hands-on STEM kits. This app was built with teachers and students in mind, providing tools for classroom management, lesson creation, and direct communication. The web app extends the tactile learning experience provided by STEM Taught’s physical kits into the digital realm, ensuring a cohesive learning experience. The visual design mirrored the bright, engaging aesthetic of the printed materials, making transitions between physical and digital seamless.
Objectives
- Design a comprehensive web app that complements STEM Taught’s physical materials.
- Provide teachers with the ability to create multimedia lessons, manage classes, grade students, and invite students to their digital classrooms.
- Enable student-teacher interaction by allowing students to ask questions and receive feedback directly within the app.
- Create a flexible and intuitive user interface, ensuring ease of use for both teachers and students.
Strategy
I focused on designing an app that would provide a user-friendly, functional platform for both teachers and students. A full interactive prototype was created using Figma, allowing for seamless design iterations and user testing before final development. This prototype enabled teachers to preview the app’s features, ensuring the platform met their practical needs while also being intuitive to use.
Teacher-Centered Features:
- Lesson Creation and Grading: Teachers could create lessons using a powerful content builder that supports text, audio, video, and other media types. This flexibility allowed teachers to design multimedia lessons, making the app adaptable to various teaching styles. The app also provided tools to grade assignments and track student progress, all from one interface.
- Classroom Management: Teachers could invite students to join their digital classrooms, making class setup and management straightforward. This streamlined the process of managing both physical and digital resources.
- Student Communication: To encourage engagement, students were given the ability to ask their teachers questions within the app. This feature promoted active participation and provided a direct channel for feedback, enhancing the overall learning experience.
Student-Focused Features:
- Interactive Engagement: The app included interactive digital quizzes and activity tracking, designed to complement the hands-on materials students used in class. This ensured that the digital platform reinforced the learning objectives introduced through physical STEM kits.
- Direct Access to Teachers: The built-in messaging system allowed students to communicate directly with their teachers, fostering a collaborative environment and ensuring students could ask questions and receive help when needed.
Results
The web app was highly praised by both teachers and students for its ease of use and its ability to integrate seamlessly with the physical STEM kits. Teachers found that the platform significantly reduced administrative tasks, making it easier to focus on teaching. They also appreciated the flexibility of the content builder, which allowed them to create engaging multimedia lessons.
Key outcomes:
- Teacher Empowerment: Teachers were able to manage their classrooms, create rich multimedia lessons, grade students, and interact with them, all through one streamlined platform.
- Enhanced Student Participation: Students were more engaged through interactive digital quizzes and the ability to communicate directly with their teachers.
- Consistency Across Learning Tools: The seamless transition between physical and digital resources helped create a cohesive and engaging learning experience for students.
